It is the heroic and tragic story of the Belomorkanal, connecting the Baltic and White Seas. 20,000 people died digging the canal. The film, made up of three sections, is a compound cinematographic object, a triangular prism. One side features the adventures of a man who exhumes corpses; another, 1930s Stalinist newsreels; and the third is a musical poem on Russian nature.
